Tooth extraction is a standard dental procedure; proper aftercare is essential for a smooth and comfortable recovery. At Edward St Dental, we prioritise the well-being of our patients and want to ensure you have all the information you need for a successful tooth extraction aftercare experience.

Immediate Post-Extraction Care

  • Managing Bleeding — After the extraction, some bleeding is normal. Gently bite on a clean gauze pad over the extraction site to control bleeding. Change the gauze as needed until the bleeding stops, usually within a few hours.
  • Pain Management — It's common to experience some discomfort after the procedure. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers. Follow the provided instructions for dosage and timing to manage pain effectively.
  • Swelling — Swelling is a typical reaction to tooth extraction. Apply an ice pack to the affected area for 15–20 minutes during the first 24 hours to minimise swelling.
  • Bruising — Some patients may develop bruising, which will subside over time. You can apply a warm compress to the bruised area after 24 hours to promote healing.

Signs of Dry Socket after a Tooth Extraction

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot over the extraction site dislodges or dissolves, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. Symptoms include:

  • Severe pain
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste

If you suspect a dry socket, we encourage you to contact your Brisbane emergency dentist immediately for treatment.

Dos and Don'ts: Foods and Drinks

  • Avoid Crunchy Foods — Eat a soft diet for the first few days. Avoid crunchy, tough or sticky foods that could irritate the extraction site.
  • Stay Hydrated — Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Avoid using straws during the initial recovery period, as sucking can dislodge the blood clot.
  • Avoid Alcoholic Beverages — Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours after the extraction.
  • Enjoy Nutrient-Rich Foods — Opt for soft, nutritious foods like yoghurt, mashed potatoes, soup and smoothies.

When Can I Return to Normal Activities?

The timeline for returning to normal activities may vary from person to person, depending on the complexity of the extraction and individual healing rates. In general:

  • Avoid strenuous activities for the first 24 hours.
  • Resume light activities as tolerated after the first day.
  • You can gradually resume your regular diet as comfort allows.
  • Follow your dentist's specific instructions regarding when you can resume more strenuous activities.
