What is a Dental Emergency?

Essentially, through the eyes of our clients, this definition has great variation. It means different things to different people. We think everyone agrees though that a true dental emergency falls into these categories:

  • Broken tooth  - which is visible, or a cracked tooth that cannot be seen but is causing pain,
  • Any severe dental pain,
  • Any level of facial swelling, and
  • Any uncontrolled dental or oral bleeding.

Over the many years of working in dentistry, we have observed that our clients often contact us for on the day emergencies for these types of situations:

  • My tooth feels rough with my tongue, no there may not necessarily be any pain,
  • My tooth is broken, out of sight, with no associated pain,
  • I saw blood in my mouth when I brushed and/or flossed my teeth,
  • I lost my orthodontic retainer,
  • My tooth looks dark for some strange reason,
  • I am overdue for my check-up,
  • My breath has a bad smell, or
  • I feel my wisdom teeth coming through.

Regardless of your emergency, you can be assured that we take any dental emergencies very seriously. We keep time aside in our schedule every working day for emergency dental work because our practice policy is to never turn away a client in need. Put simply, we guarantee to see your dental emergency on the day of contact.

What will happen at your dental emergency visit?

Discomfort Diagnosed & Pain Relieved

Put simply, your immediate discomfort will be diagnosed, explained to you, a cost estimate given, and, if your consent is given, a small procedure to get you pain free will be performed.

Edward Street Dental is particularly experienced in the management of oro-facial pain. We are especially empathetic to the sometimes fragile emotions that come with such vulnerable circumstances. As our policy is to never turn away a client in need, you will be seen on the day of contact where-ever humanly possible.

How many visits will be needed for my dental emergency?

Treatment Protocols

In the majority of circumstances, only one visit is needed to become pain-free. While there are exceptions, these are very rare at Edward Street Dental. Our team is extremely experienced in and committed to the management of oro-facial pain. In many cases, though, follow-up visits are needed to complete the dental treatment after dental pain is removed.

Usually, there are multiple options to consider to complete treatment, with varying costs associated and varying outcomes. It is our philosophy that our patients can make the best decisions for their dental health AFTER their dental pain has been removed.

We prefer to look after you first, get you feeling better, and then give you more time to determine the best path moving forward.

How to get an appointment for your Dental Emergency
